2006 Toyota Prius 4dr Hatchback (1.5L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)

Review

I only have this car for a month now, and I love it. The only problem I have is the rear mirror - wish there was a better way to see out of it. I also get about 45 mpg - do not know how to get it to go higher. That is around town. I got about 51 on a trip last week. Great car-traded in our Hondy Odyssey since the family is now grown, and my husband and I just love the Prius. We keep our cars forever and I believe we will be keeping this Prius. We love it so far.

Favorite Features

Fun to drive.

Suggested Improvements

Make it easier to see out of the back window. Make it easier to figure out how to get the mileage to be as high as they say.

My wife and I finally talked each other into buying a Prius 3 weeks ago and we are very happy. Very well built and fun to drive and it is a constent reminder about what we can do better if we are willing to make changes. They were smart to show the MPG and allow you to retrain yourself with how you drive. You never forget that it is a hybrid and I think that is smart design decision. Also a great way to educate my kids on pollution, smart technology that looks to solve a real problem and allowing yourself to try new things.

Favorite Features

Display showing what is going on and MPG and the room for a family of 4. All for a reasonable priced car that is well built.

Suggested Improvements

Wife says it takes too many selections to control climate. Should be more direct.

Review

I have found the Prius provides one of the most enjoyable driving experiences I have ever had with any car. Over the years I have driven 2-3 dozen different automobiles. What has made the experience so enjoyable is that the car has changed my driving style, all for the better. The on-going fuel consumption monitoring/reporting system has encouraged me to set new consumption goals each trip I make with the car, thus forcing me to do the things that make my drives safer and more economic.

Favorite Features

Fuel economy, appearance, comfort, internal instrumentation

Suggested Improvements

Darker internal finishes and coverings showing less dirt, stains, etc.

380 miles on 1st tank (~9.5 gal)

Review

I got 43 mpg on my first tank - I use the car to commute 8+ miles (each way) to work - 3/4 of the daily trip is local, and ~4 miles are highway. The handling is great - the weight of the car is nicely distributed and you can really tell the difference when making tight turns. The start from traffic light is much faster because of the electric motor assist. Overall it's much more responsive than a normal gas engine car, and I can really tell the difference when I switch to drive my wife's regular car.

Favorite Features

Handling, gas millage.

Suggested Improvements

The gas tank can only holds 10+ gal? Also I don't think I can get 50+ mpg out of this car, maybe it's just because of my driving pattern. But for the premium $5K over a regular camry and only 10K driven per year, that's only 100 gal a year saving, or $300/year. Toyota should really lower the price.

Over all I think this is a very good buy. I am saving tons of money on gas already. I drive an hour+ each way to and from work so this has been wonderful. Even though the freeway I use has no carpool lane, the savings makes a big difference. Everyone asks questions about my car everywhere I go, and Im so happy to show them all the goodies on it. I would love everyone to own at least one hybrid.

Favorite Features

Quite engine, mileage, technology, keyless entry, keyless start, color, control panel, double glove box, and probably many things I haven't found yet. LOL There is so much.

Suggested Improvements

Seat comfort, I hate that I cant slide the seat back at all. I feel a little cramped driving. And the seat makes my butt hurt after 30 minutes of driving. Maybe its too hard?? This car is not for very tall people. You cant put the seat back any further for some strange reason. Its set too close.

Review

A very good car. Excellent build quality from Toyota. Has lots of pep and handles very well. There is a little more body roll in cornering than most sedans but it is not uncomfortable. Gas mileage is very good but it will flucuate depending on the steepness of the hills that you have to drive over, but still I drive in West Virginia and average between 46 and 55 mpg on the highway at 65 to 75 mph. It also has great aerodynamics and has no handling problems around large semis. City driving is high 50's to 60 mpg. Interior is very roomy with Lexus type build quality with few complaints. The back window takes getting used to but the car comes with a rear camera display for backing.

Favorite Features

Quiet operation, comfortable, great build quality, nice power, good cruise control, easy to use features, nice displays, fantastic gas mileage.

Suggested Improvements

Should have daytime running lights option. Radio reception is a little weak. Standard sound system is good but not great.

Love to drive the car in the city and on the highway. Even the back seat is comfortable to ride in on extended trips. Would like to see the hybrid technology in the Toyota trucks.

Favorite Features

The interior upholstery is very comfortable. the controls are easily accessed and the console has all the features you could want with the nav and the Blue Tooth features.

Suggested Improvements

Better visibility in the rear window and the rearview mirror.

Review

I have buyers remorse. The fuel economy has not lived up to the talk -- avg about 45mpg. Drivers seat/wheel/dash ergonomics very poor. Human factor design terrible on things like digital speedo (analog is easier to read, thus safer), fuel guage and other dash read-outs -- very illogically placed and distract from driving. Especially climate controls having to be accessed via the electronic screen. Give me knobs for easy feel of adjustments levels without needing to take my eyes and brain off my driving. Audio system the same -- just take it off the screen menus. Navigation is a pain to learn and use -- very user unfriendly. Transmission knob idiotic and key/locking system beyond logic.

Favorite Features

Hatchback is convenient. Back seat leg room very impressive. Leather seats comfortable/supportive (though lack adjustment). Dual glove box and console storage nice. Nice color exterior. Boring color interior -- lt grey or beige are the ilk of rental fleets. Give me black - classier and easier care.

Suggested Improvements

Hatch window view is poor. Glossy plastic interior areas cheap and attract dust via static charge. Ergonomics for driver. Better instrumentation (logically inform the driver of vital info). With all the digital tech info on this thing, it will not give me a miles-to-empty reading? Explain that.

Review

We purchased our Prius primarily because of its excellent gas mileage and its being an environmentally friendly vehicle plus Toyota's reputation for outstanding engineering, trading in our Acura 2.5. The Prius was met all of our expectations and has also been a great car for longish road trips on interstates and back roads-a very pleasant surprise we had not expected. It's also been a lot of fun to drive. We'd certainly buy it again.

Favorite Features

A superbly engineered and designed car that has been fun to drive while getting excellent mileage and doing our bit for the environment. REALLY solid!!

Suggested Improvements

As senior citizens we'd appreciate a little more interior luxery-a possible holdover from our Acura days. Seat covering and interior surfaces seem too prone to showing wear/stains/marks.
