"At what speed? My highway driving in the south/mid west meant 75 mph with the AC on. " It was at 68 - 73 MPH as I recall, that was a long time ago! My highway trips were between LA and Albuquerque, so my A/C was running as well. The speed depended upon the state - Arizona has the highest speed limits, but I believe that CA and NM had 65 MPH at the time, so I drove 68 in those states. I had the limited slip rear end as well, which I believe actually reduces MPG. Keep in mind that I had the 5 speed, and the fifth speed is basically an overdrive. NOT an automatic...

It is American. The caption to the picture is as follows "Chrysler auto assembly workers leave the plant after their shift ends at the Chrysler Warren Truck Assembly in Warren, Michigan October 14, 2008." http://news.yahoo.com/nphotos/Chrysler-auto-assembly-Warren2C-Michigan-Chrysler-- Warren-Truck-Assembly/photo//081117/photos_ts/2008_11_17t010453_450x322_us_autos- _bailout_opinions//s:/nm/20081117/us_nm/us_autos_bailout_opinions;_ylt=AiC84v6v4- 9ie7OGc6pTW4tcXIr0F#photoViewer=/081117/photos_ts/2008_11_17t010453_450x322_us_a- utos_bailout_opinions
Trip to Dallas
by dispencer2 on Sun Nov 16 22:31:49 PST 2008
Took the new Cobalt coupe over to Ft. Worth and Dallas (about 450 miles) this weekend just to see what the car was like on the road. It ranged from 33-38 MPG -I drove usually 60-70 mph on cruise. As I suspected the short seats caused some thigh pain after a few hours but you have plenty of room to move your legs around. What was amazing was the passing power and the fact that after 6 hours my back didn't hurt. The Impala caused back aches and it still had bucket seats. The lumbar control is helpful but so is the fairly hard seat that provides good support. Handling was fine in heavy traffic on the Interstates around the Metroplex. All in all it was a good road car. The steering wheel is better on the Impala -bigger controls and more tilt. You feel the pavement, bumps, and, road noise is worse than my Cadillac Deville but for the money (and for even more money) the Cobalt is a fine car. I didn't buy it for long distance trips but it is very capable of them. I like the big doors and windows on the coupe. The sedan feels smaller.

"Thanks for the responses but I'm still not sure that my original question was answered. What about the typical driver (not trying to trick any system or disengage front or rear drives) on your basic snow or icy road (not off-road or climbing sand hills). " I owned a 2003 CR-V, which used the older RT4WD system, and I took a vacation to Yosemite in January. The roads were iced over, there was a major snowstorm going, and I saw a lot of cars slipping off the road. With careful driving I went the entire week without my chains, and without slipping. I also came out of Chaco Canyon NM after a major desert rainstorm had turned the roads to New Mexico Mud (if you've seen it, you know what I mean). I gunned the engine for about 20 miles and went through all sorts of stuff. I didn't slow down until I hit pavement, because the CR-V (and all part time systems) are not really meant for getting out of deep mud holes - and have no winch. All for wheels were spinning for 45 minutes, mud was all over the car (including the roof), everybody was scared out of their wits. Breathtaking, but I'd never do it again, with any vehicle. Both the above show that the CR-V can be used in difficult conditions, if you drive it to its strengths and not to its weaknesses. Having said that, you are not going to beat a Subaru full-time AWD system with limited slip differential. The Subie is going to have better traction. But the CR-V will also work if the driver is careful.

My deal was a trade-in (2006 LS 430) so I'm not able to tell how much I paid as a cash price. I gave them $12K per year as depreciation and added the difference in the invoice on the old car and the new car. Probably not a good or great deal, but with a trade in it's hard to figure what you really paid. I still believe the LS430 was a quieter car and perhaps more refined after several years of production on the same model. I have double paned glass on the driver and passenger sides. I still notice some road noise, more than the LS430 (in my opinion). The rear window has a reflection glare on it when driving away from the sun. I had tint put on the windows and that seems to cut down on the back window glare. I lost the storage drawers under the driver and passenger seats along with the little drawer in the dash below the CD changer. The ash tray is very small and not useful for anything when removed. The ash tray on the LS430 provided a storage bin when the ash tray was removed. The 8 speed tranny is taking a bit of getting used to, along with the lack of manual parking brake, all improvements that will pay dividends in the future. All in all, I'm beginning to like the new car more as I drive it more.
CR's Annual Buying Guide
by dispencer2 on Thu Nov 13 08:08:42 PST 2008
The annual buyers guide from Consumer Reports panned the Cobalt as usual. What was interesting was the black mark signifying the fact that owners (who answered the annual questionnaire) were highly dissatisfied with the car and most likely wouldn't buy another. I wonder what is so wrong with this car. The coupe is sportier than anything else in the price range, the powertrain is fairly simple, gas mileage is average for a compact, and the car rides as well as an Impala. I haven't had any problems with mine thus far although I understand from the dealer that the 05 and 06's had lots of annoying small problems.
