Re: TIRES cupped after 6000 mi. [jsandpc]

Thanks for your recent post and promise to keep all updated on your progress or not. I know I was not crazy to start a post in the first place with my Caliber issues back in 2006 on this site. Maybe, just maybe, we can save others time and most of all money with our own experiences. Nobody these days can afford the car payments, let alone, repairs or issues that won't go away.

I am having the exact same tire/wheel problem with my Caliber. I live in New York. I drive on good new roads and avoid the bad ones. I have had my Caliber regularly serviced (tire rotations) by my dealer. Shortly after the 2nd tire rotation, I noticed a slight road noise. After a few weeks, the noise became louder. I'll describe the noise like this...If you have ever been standing near the road when a 4 wheel drive pickup with monster mudder tires passed you, then you have heard the exact noise my Caliber has been making. People walking on the road would stare as I drove by and one group of kids covered their ears as I passed them. Even at 5 MPH, there was a noise that sounded like a flat tire. My dealer has been accommodating so far. They stood in my corner when I contacted Chrysler regarding this issue. The dealer stated he had similar issues with other Calibers, which the Chrysler CSR also admitted. Chrysler purchased new tires for me with a slight deductible. Just for safety measure, I paid for a 4 wheel alignment as well. They checked the suspension and found it was secure and tight. But, the problem is not over. After driving home from the dealer, the noise was gone, but I could still feel an extreme vibration in the front end. It was the same vibration I had in the past, but without the road noise. I immediately took the car back to my dealer and left the keys in the night key drop with a note. I don't want to drive it until the problem is corrected, because I don't want the same thing to happen to my new tires. I still like the car, but I will not drive it until this problem is corrected. The car is at the dealer right now. I'll post updates as things progress. Good Luck Everyone!

Re: No issues (yet) with RFTs [xeye]
by mjbauer on Sun Nov 16 09:55:15 PST 2008
Well I have to concur, but also add a qualifier. I have an 08 335xi with Bridgestone EL42's all four are 225/45 17's. And they are great so far with about 12000 miles on them. My initial concern stemmed from being a passenger in an 06 325 with the stock runflats. They were so noisy at low speeds in city driving I was very concerned about using them. I wound up test driving two 335xi's to double check the noise but they sounded like regular tires to me, no nosier than my wife's car and not as noisy as my M3 with Pilot Sports That being said, I will likely opt for snow tires as here in Michigan where we live we get enough snow to make good snows a valuable option I can understand completely the concern on the RFT's. I think that the early versions were terrible. I do believe BMW (and other manufacturers) made the decision for several reasons. First is cost, eliminating a tire and a wheel saves money. Packaging, if you don't have to find the space for a tire and wheel you get a lot of space back. Another reason is us. We don't like to be inconvenienced at all so stopping and changing a tire is not something we like to do. I suspect I drive a bit more aggressively than xeye but so far so good. I do not get the same level of handling as my M3 with the Michelin Pilot sports but I don't use that handling very often on the street very often in all honesty. So far the RFT's have worked very well for me so this short note is just my $.02 worth (and likely less valuable than that :-)

I was looking for a fun car and had a great experience at Jim Ellis VW of Marietta, GA. Has luxury pkg.,clean title, 23k miles, 3y/36k mi. ext. warranty and paid 19800 OTD. Love the moonson radio, will get ipod connector installed. Any suggestions on where to get VW accesories cheaper than dealer, like a bra, spoiler?
Re: Mazda3 Clutch Problems Anyone? [parabola]
by jeffyscott on Sun Nov 16 05:30:12 PST 2008
Isn't that low even by American car standards? I love it, your mazda clutch goes only 50K mi and you turn it into a way to bash the US manufacturers. I have owned 4 american cars with manuals, never replaced a clutch on any of them. These cars had 110K to 150K on them when I got rid of them. However, the life of a clutch is very dependent on where and how you drive. Obviously a lot of stop and go traffic means more wear as does resting your left foot on the clutch pedal.
